EIGHT

THE LIGHT UNDER THE door went out an hour earlier and still Mack waited, her bones stiff with inactivity as she lay awake in the dark. She couldn’t remember being happier ... or more nervous ... or more frightened.

“Come to me later,” he’d whispered as the cocktail hour came to a close and they walked back to the outer office for dinner. Great effort had been taken to make the occasion something special. White sheets covered every flat surface, and a great many flowers from the greenhouse had been cut and placed in beakers of water about the room. The desk lamp provided overall illumination, but candles burned here and there for the sake of ambience. “Polly and the kid sleep like rocks. Wait for Joanne to fall asleep, and then meet me out here. I have another surprise for you.”

Oh, she just bet he did! and she flushed hot from the roots of her hair to the tips of her toes thinking about it. He laughed.

“Maybe that, too, but I really do have another surprise for you.” He caught her uneasy gaze and smiled at her. “Will you come?”

“I’ll try.”

But there she was, rigid as a frozen fish, unable to move.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go—she did. She’d donned her favorite emerald-green satin traveling pajamas for the occasion. She was as giddy as a kid on Christmas Eve. She knew what was awaiting her in the next room: her fondest wish, her heart’s desire. Presents and treasures galore. Still, she didn’t move, unsure, worried that she might not have been good enough that year. Afraid of frightening Santa Claus off before he could leave her gifts. Wondering what he’d do if she’d asked for too much that year ...

Visions of her mother ebbed in and out of her thoughts. Never in her life had she felt more ... akin to her; understood her so well, or wanted to talk to her so badly.

Passion was a powerful force to withstand. Especially if all you had to battle it with was common sense and fear. And who would understand this better than her mother? What would have happened if her mother had been a stronger person? What if she hadn’t been susceptible to love and romance that summer so long ago? Come
